4e Brands issues voluntary recall of hand sanitizers in United States

4e Brands North America, LLC has reportedly issued a voluntary recall of ten bottle sizes of the hand sanitizers due to the potential methanol (wood alcohol) presence.

Risks factors associated with substantial exposure to the undeclared methanol include coma, seizures, permanent blindness, blurred vision, headache, vomiting, nausea, permanent nervous system damage, or death. Additionally, ingestion of these products, either accidentally or as a substitute to alcohol may lead to methanol poisoning. However, the company has not received any report of adverse events on the usage of the products to date.

The recalled products are used as hand sanitizers and have been marketed to protect the skin from bacteria or germs. The affected hand sanitizers due to the recent recall are packaged in plastic bottles. These products are covered with a blue cap. Additionally, the product label consists of only red, silver, white, and blue coloring. The lot number consists of 4 digits, which are printed on the sanitizer bottles. The products were marketed nationwide in the U.S. via distributors and retailers.

4e Brands North America has been notifying the retailers and distributors via the recall letter. Consumers have also been notified of the recent product recall via the press release. The company is apparently arranging services for the return and refund of the recalled products. It is expected that the retailers, distributors, and consumers that have products subject to the recall should stop selling, distributing, and using those hand sanitizers and get the products returned.

Consumers are requested to contact the healthcare professionals and physicians in case of experiencing any problem related to using the recalled hand sanitizers. The adverse events from the usage of the product are to be reported to the MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program of FDA, through online, mail, or fax. The recall has been issued in accordance with the knowledge of the U.S. FDA.
