Amazon to set up a huge distribution unit in Canada’s capital city

The globally renowned retail giant Amazon is reportedly planning to build a new distribution unit in the capital city of Canada. As per an official company statement, the new establishment in Ottawa is likely to span 1 million square feet and will be located at Boundary road & highway 417. The edifice will be set up on a property spanning 96 acres and will be endowed with 1,000 parking spaces and 99 truck loading bays.

Experts predict that the distribution center is likely to cost the firm anywhere between USD 100 million to USD 200 million. It has been speculated that the initiative will result in the creation of approximately a thousand new jobs.

Shevaun Brown, Amazon’s spokesperson, has declared that the eCommerce firm is consistently searching for new sites for expanding its business operations in North America and also intends to grow its network across the region for addressing consumer requirements. In the fourth quarter of the last year, the company had even planned to establish a huge distribution center spanning 600,000 square feet at Balzac in Canada that led to the generation of 750 full-time jobs.

For the record, Amazon.com Inc. operates six distribution centers in Canada with four of them situated in the Greater Toronto Area, while the other two established in Vancouver. Reportedly, the firm has its corporate offices set up at Vancouver, Ottawa, and Toronto.

The retailer had declared last year that it will invest nearly USD 5 billion in the North American region and will provide employment to about fifty-thousand personnel in the future.

Analysts are of the view that the company’s move to continue with its investment spree in Canada will help to resolve the problem of high unemployment rates that arose on account of the two-year recession period witnessed in the country.
