Colorado witnesses world’s largest solar power & battery storage bids

Xcel Energy, the Minnesota based utility holding company, has apparently unveiled a new proposal which aims to carry out solar power projects with a battery storage capacity of 275 MW and 707 MW in the state of Colorado. As per reliable sources, the plan features a total of five solar power projects, three of which are likely to be energy storage facilities.

Reportedly, Xcel Energy submitted the proposal, known as the 2016 Electric Resource Plan 120-day report, to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission on Wednesday. Sources reveal that the plan intends to shut down the 660 MW of coal generation from the Commanche 1 and Commanche 2 plants in the Pueblo region. Moreover, the plan puts forth a comprehensive financial analysis on numerous potential paths forward that can be undertaken by the utility for its service areas in the state of Colorado.

As per reports, solar power bids have come in at 2.2 to 2.7 cents per kilowatt-hour and solar plus storage at 3 to 3.2 cents per kilowatt-hour. An additional 1.1 GW of wind energy has been proposed in the report which is likely to be offered at 1.8 cents per kilowatt-hour. Xcel Energy, the state’s largest utility, noted in a statement that the opportunity offered unprecedented pricing to its customers.

According to The Denver Post, President of Xcel Energy, Alice Jackson claimed in a press release that the plan recommended by the utility would substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions, secure low-cost and long-term renewable power, ensure significant savings to customers, and accelerate economic development in rural Colorado.

Sources familiar with the development claim that the Preferred Colorado Energy Plan Portfolio (CEPP) would accelerate some solar power deployment to avail the benefit of the federal investment Tax Credit. For the record, the Preferred CEPP contains the largest amounts of solar power of the total projects to be constructed.
