Instacart & Costco team up to launch new prescription delivery service

Instacart, a US-based grocery delivery and pickup service company, has reportedly announced its plan to launch a new prescription delivery service in partnership with Costco, a renowned US-based membership-only store chain, as the need for online delivery is growing due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement, the company stated the delivery of groceries is available from about 200 Costco locations in California, Arizona, Delaware, Illinois, Florida, New York, Washington D.C., and Washington. The delivery service that was primarily operating across various locations in Washington and Southern California, would now expand throughout the country soon.

Consumers subscribed to the online prescription service would get a text message from Costco once their prescription is ready. Costco’s text message would have a link with a choice to set a date and time for the delivery of their prescription.

Clicking the link would redirect the customer to Costco’s official site from where consumers would confirm their prescription and can further continue to add household goods and groceries to the Instacart Costco delivery package. Customers would get this order in a tamper-proof, sealed bag that ensures the privacy and safety of the consumers.

In addition, Instacart is providing contactless delivery for several medications. Instacart shoppers can also scan a consumer’s ID to verify his identity without a sign for qualifying prescription orders. Customers can also schedule their prescription delivery one week prior through the new service.

Nilam Ganenthiran, the President of Instacart stated that the new delivery service was developed due to the increasing demand for groceries and other essentials amid the coronavirus crisis. The company knows that for several people, a part of their grocery shopping goes beyond pantry staples, seafood, fresh produce, and meat, they also require certain medications.

Instacart has witnessed an exponential growth in demand for its grocery delivery services during the COVID-19 outbreak. The total order volume of the firm was 400% greater in comparison with the same week in the previous year. Customers were also seen spending more for groceries. The mean consumer basket size, which is what the customer spends on the orders, is over 25% month-over-month.
