U.S. HHS to probe production of defective coronavirus test kits

The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has reportedly announced that the agency is examining early coronavirus test kits for manufacturing defects that led few states to get emergency permission to use their own COVID-19 test kits.

According to a statement, Andrew Cuomo, New York Governor, said that the state would immediately commence using its own test kits developed after taking permission from U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Meanwhile, FDA claims that the agency would allow some laboratories to immediately use tests they have validated for effective diagnosis of coronavirus.

Stephen Hahn, FDA Commissioner, said that upon knowing about the test issues from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the agency has worked with CDC to determine that problems with some test components were due to the manufacturing defects.

Hahn added that the FDA has confidence in the current manufacturing and design of the tests that already have passed through extensive quality control procedures.

Alex Azar, Secretary, HHS, meanwhile said that the U.S has over 75,000 test kits on hand and, in the next week, that would expand radically. He said that more than 3,600 people in the U.S have been tested to date.

Reportedly, the HHS has announced recently that it has introduced an investigation and sanctioned a team of non-CDC scientists to understand the source and nature of manufacturing defects in test kit in a better way.

Coronavirus disease has raised the concerns of governments across the globe. Currently, there are no particular treatments authorized by the U.S FDA to treat COVID-19 patients. As per the CDC, there have been 14 confirmed cases of COVID-19 recorded in the United States and an additional 39 cases among persons deported to the U.S.
