Volvo and Audi resort to Android for their next-generation connected car operating system

Renowned tech giant Google stated that Volvo and Audi, behemoths of global automotive market, reportedly plan to integrate the Android operating system into its next-generation vehicles that will power their infotainment systems and help the passengers control features such as air conditioning.

Android Auto, Google’s popular smartphone standard, which has already created waves in the tech cosmos, allows Android mobiles to be operated in cars via the dashboard unit, thereby allowing passengers to extend their Android experience to an adaptable vehicle. Google however, has been in talks with renowned automakers to provide an exceptional Android experience, subject to which it has declared collaborations with Audi and Volvo, two of the largest auto manufacturing companies to choose Android for their future connected cars’ operating systems.

The tech conglomerate has stated that the new Android operating system embedded in cars will be compatible with music streaming services such as Spotify and apps such as Google Maps, which will reportedly enable people to have an out-of-the-world, modern, tech-savvy car driving experience. In addition, it has also stated that passengers will be able to browse nearby restaurants and pubs by means of Google Assistant, the company’s voice-activated assisted service.

Furthermore, reports state that this OS will even enable the control of basic functions such as cooling and heating, closing or opening the car doors and windows, and monitoring the seat position. The main screen touch displays and dashboards are also expected to be powered with new features with the integration of this OS in the future connected cars of Audi and Volvo.

For both these auto magnates, this deal is expected to be a rewarding move, considering that the smartphone will still hold a very important place in the tech-savvy life of the average car owner. The integration of Android in the connected cars will only serve to expand the consumer base of both these companies. Besides, with the development of infotainment technology, automakers have been striving to innovate novel technologies in their cars. This collaboration with Google will thereby help Volvo and Audi enhance their infotainment systems and give a competitive edge to their rivals in the industry.

Volvo’s top officials have quoted that with the integration of Android in the operating systems of their future IoT enabled cars, Volvo’s originality will remain unaltered, and at the same time, will provide customers with the experience of the best apps, connected services, and a seamless driving experience.

For the record, Audi has declared that it will show off its version of the Android powered OS in its brand-new Audi Q8 Sport concept. Volvo however, has stated that it aims to implement its Android powered connected cars in the next two years.
