Walmart announces the launch of Walmart+ to provide free delivery

The world’s biggest retailer Walmart has reportedly announced the launch of its ‘Walmart+’ membership program to provide free delivery to its customers. The program directly aims at challenging the e-commerce giant, Amazon, and will be rolled out by the company from September 15.

According to Janey Whiteside, the Chief Customer Officer at Walmart, in a crisis where life seems more complicated than ever, Walmart+ is equipped to make it easier by providing customers the opportunity of not to have to sacrifice on convenience or costs. She has further highlighted that Walmart has always been a champion for offering the right item at the right price, but now it is much more than that. The company comes up with the right shopping solutions at the right time, added Whiteside.

As per sources, Walmart+ will be launched to replace the company’s “Delivery Unlimited” subscription service that provided the home delivery of over 160,000 items. The new service charges a sum of $98 on an annual basis or $12.95 as the monthly charge to provide free delivery as early as the same day, giving discounts on fuel and other features.

Walmart’s launch of Walmart+ is the recent step in e-commerce ramp-up that was impelled by the company’s acquisition of Jet.com in 2016 for a sum of $3.3 billion. The company has also advanced billions of dollars in additional investments intending to support the development of smartphone applications, refurbishment of supply chains, and launch of curbside pickup of groceries and other items at thousands of stores in the U.S.

The new service will reportedly offer members with discounts amounting to five cents per gallon at Walmart’s gasoline stations. The company has also incorporated a scan-and-go feature allowing consumers to pay for items by scanning them via a smartphone application, thus ensuring an easy, quick, and touch-free payment experience, added Walmart on its website.
