Aurinia inks agreement with Lonza for new manufacturing plant

Aurinia Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Lonza Ltd. have reportedly inked a collaborative agreement to develop a devoted manufacturing facility within Lonza’s Visp-based small molecule API facility. The new facility, which is also referred to as ‘monoplant, will be equipped with cutting-edge manufacturing equipment to offer coast and production efficiency for manufacturing voclosporin, while expanding current capacity and offering supply security to meet future commercial demand.

Sources cite that the new agreement is based on the foundation of both parties' fruitful multi-year relationships. The deal, which is subject to U.S. regulatory approval of voclosporin, doesn’t impact the launch supply for voclosporin as this is secured by the present inventory. The monoplant is expected to be operational in 2023.

Speaking on which, Peter Greenleaf, CEO and President at Aurinia Pharmaceuticals said that Lonza’s top-notch partnership and expertise have helped the company to optimize the complex and unique manufacturing process need for the synthesis of voclosporin.

The company is presently equipped with sufficient product supply for launch and expected market demand, Mr. Greenleaf said while adding that a new production capability would help keep the company’s manufacturing costs low and assure long-term flexibility to meet future demand for ensuing years.

Gordon Bates who is the President for Small Molecules Division at Lonza said that this partnership is an ideal example of how the company can aid both early as well as commercial-stage biopharmaceutical firms through innovative inflexible business models and manufacturing technology.

He added that the company is looking forward to further strengthening its relationship with Aurinia into a productive and long partnership to supply this cutting-edge medicine to patients worldwide.

After receiving U.S FDA approval for voclosporin, Aurinia will start numerous capital expenditure payments. After the completion of this new facility, the company will have the right to keep unobstructed use of the monoplant by reimbursing a quarterly fixed facility payment.
