Gorillas plans U.S. debut this month via New York City launch

German ultra fast delivery startup, Gorillas, has reportedly revealed its plans of entering the U.S. market by launching its service across Brooklyn, using bike couriers.

If sources are to be believed, the start-up will kickstart its 10-minute delivery service for goods, including fresh produce, milk, and cat litter, in select Brooklyn neighborhoods effective from May 30. Through this move, Gorillas will be directly competing with Fridge No More, which is a startup known for its 15-minutes grocery delivery across parts of the New York City borough.

Notably, Gorillas has zero reliability on gig workers to fulfill deliveries and employs a fleet of bike couriers in order to deliver goods from strategically positioned dark warehouses, unlike grocery-delivery operators Uber, Instacart, and DoorDash.

The consumers can make an order for a basket of goods or a single item, with a delivery fee cost of $1.80, minus minimum purchase requirements in the US.

However, there would be certain weight limitations given that the groceries would be delivered by bike. Also, each warehouse will be able to hold around 2,000 to 2,500 items, inclusive of milk, fresh produce, and cat litter.

The CEO of Gorillas, Kagan Sümer, expressed appreciation for the model and stated that it would be transformative in a big way upon its execution in the right way.

Sources also confirm that Gorillas delivery choices, depending on the neighborhood, would also comprise artisan foods from local businesses. Apparently, the startup would carry ice cream, bagels, and chocolate truffles from OddFellows Ice Cream Co., Black Seed Bagel, and Fine and Raw, respectively in Brooklyn.

For the record, Gorillas was launched in June 2020 and constitutes 80 warehouses across 25 cities in Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, and France. It is also reportedly in plans to expand its presence in Italy later this month.
