IIBR to commence human clinical trials for COVID-19 vaccine from Nov 1

The Israel Institute for Biological Research will reportedly commence human trials of its SARS-Cov-2 vaccine candidate named, Brilife, starting November 1st, 2020, after it successfully secured all approvals necessary from the Helsinki Committee and the Ministry of Health, Israel.

The Alternate Prime Minister-cum-Defence Minister of Israel, Benny Gantz, expressed his gratitude towards IIBR researchers as this announcement brings hope to the country’s citizens. He further stated that the government had received the first vial of vaccine just over two months ago and today, there are 25,000 vaccine doses already, with the next trial phase about to commence.

Gantz praised the numerous researchers who work round the clock on this mission, in complete collaboration with the country’s Ministry of Health, likening them to a “commando unit” that is making way for Israelis to lead a healthy life through a mission of historical and international significance.

On the basis of existing virus (VSV), IIBR’s vaccine candidate has coronavirus spikes engineered to VSV, allowing it to append to cells within the body. The candidate has been tested successfully on numerous ‘animal models’ and provoked an immune response in small animals comprising rabbits, mice, and hamsters as well as larger animals including pigs. The candidate’s safety has been further showcased in numerous tests, consequently opening the threshold for human clinical trials.

IIBR Director, Prof. Shmuel Shapira, is of the opinion that the institute is beginning a vital phase of clinical trials in the process of vaccine development. Shapira further added that IIBR believes in the capabilities of its scientists and is confident of producing an effective and safe vaccine.

IIBR was founded in 1952 under the Science Corps of the Israel Defence Forces, and was later classified as a civilian organization. Sources cite, Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s Prime Minister had called on the institute back in February for devoting resources towards the development of a COVID-19 vaccine.
