M&S to raise minimum wage and offer free health checks to workers

British retail company Marks & Spencer (M&S) is reportedly planning to increase its minimum pay to $13.5 (£10) an hour, up by more than 5%. Apart from offering a hike in the minimum wage, the retailer is also intending to provide free health checks to workers, as employers respond to labor shortages by putting up wages across the hospitality and retail industries.

The recent initiative puts M&S workers aged 23 years and above ahead of the legal minimum wage of $12.9 (£9.50) an hour, which shall come into force in April 2021 and is on par with Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, and other supermarkets.

For the record, more than 40,000 staff across the UK would be offered with a 50% rise in their base rate of pay per hour, with rates in London rising from $14.6 (£10.75) to $15.2 (£11.25), the retailer stated. Other benefits include health check screening, access to an online GP service, and advice on financial management.

Supermarket chains that participated in the wave of minimum wage raises include Aldi, which increased the minimum hourly rates for its shop workers to $14.3 (£10.57) from $12.9 (£9.55) an hour across the nation in February 2022. In addition, Next is also targeting to sell its clothing with a price increase of as much as 6% this autumn, as the retailer expects an average wage raise by above 5% in 2022.

In the hospitality sector, Pret a Manger increased its hourly pay in January 2022 for the second time in 4 months, with above 6,900 of its 8,500 staff earning at least $13.5 (£10) an hour. This initiative was taken after the pay was put up by 5% to $12.77 (£9.40) an hour in September.

Furthermore, coffee shop workers are also able to earn $1.7 (£1.25) an hour more, as per a weekly mystery shopper assessment.
