POTUS Biden directs HHS to initiate federal efforts for long COVID

President Joe Biden has reportedly directed the HHS (Health and Human Services) Department to initiate a national effort to understand, diagnose, and treat long COVID.

Xavier Becerra, the Secretary of HHS stated that he will lead a federal council that comprises the Veterans Affairs, Departments of Defense, and Labor. The council will share real-time insights on methods to prevent, diagnose, and treat long COVID.

Doctors and scientists still do not entirely understand why some people who are affected by COVID witness symptoms months later, sometimes with impairing consequences for everyday life. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people getting a mild illness post-infection and people who do not have any symptoms initially develop long COVID.

Other people also experience conditions that affect several organs like the heart, kidney, lung, brain, and skin. Around 8,000 children have developed symptoms called MIS-C (multisystem inflammatory syndrome). At least 66 children have deceased from MIS-C.

The White House stated that the research plan will expedite the admission of around 40,000 people to the study of the National Institutes of Health on the long-term effects of COVID infection. In September, the NIH unveiled a large-scale study called Recover.

The federal initiative will also conduct a nationwide survey from the Veteran Affairs regarding persistent post-infection symptoms, and a study from the Defense Department on the risk factors for disease development among service members.

The 2023 budget of the Biden administration will include USD 20 million to help offer optimum care to patients suffering from long COVID which includes the development of multispecialty clinics. In addition, the budget includes USD 25 million to foster CDC research into the health effects and risk factors of long COVID.

Nevertheless, Congress is less interested than the Biden administration to finance the U.S. Covid response.
