Russia to start clinical trial of novel COVID-19 vaccine in 2 weeks

Russia has recently announced its plan to start the clinical trials of the potential COVID-19 vaccine within a period of two weeks.

The health ministry in Russia has recently informed about the approval from the authorities to commence the trial process of the 1st anti-COVID-19 drug of the country.

Countries across the globe are currently in the race for the development of a coronavirus vaccine to support the people and governments in their efforts against the pandemic. Several other countries, including the U.S., Canada, Germany, and the UK, have already moved to the next phase of the vaccine development as they have started to conduct human trials of the drug.

Sources familiar with the matter have stated that the country is the 3rd most impacted region by the coronavirus pandemic, with nearly 400,000 positive cases as well as 9,000 new cases. However, the number of fatalities caused due to the virus in Russia is relatively lower as compared to other major countries. The virus has claimed the lives of over 4,693 people in the region to date, while 171,883 patients have recovered. Given the low death rates and decent recovery rates, Russia is emerging as a model to educate other countries about the preventive measures to be taken against the pandemic.

Critics, however, have allegedly stated that the former Union for Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) is not providing an accurate number of active cases and deaths, which could be higher than what is being informed.

The COVID-19 pandemic has reportedly infected nearly 6 million people globally and has claimed the life of more than 369,000 patients. People with knowledge of the matter have claimed that the virus has originated from the Chinese wet market in the Wuhan city, where the exotic animals were illegally being traded.
