UAE online marketplace Noon to enter the food delivery sector

Noon, an e-commerce platform operating in the Middle East, is reportedly planning to launch a food delivery marketplace with an aim to support the region’s food and beverage businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to reports, the decision was taken by the firm’s founder Mohamed Alabbar who said that their systems for food aggregation is ready to work with F&B operators on a fair, commercial basis. Condemning the region’s food delivery players for applying up to 30% commission on orders, Alabbar said that aggregators are practically robbing F&B operators with such commissions.

Noon has not made it clear if it will launch a marketplace that will allow restaurants to take orders from customers or will offer food delivery services as well on behalf of restaurants. Although, it is planning to launch a white-label platform that enables restaurants to develop and manage their own website and take orders on it.

According to Faraz Khalid, Chief Executive, Noon, food and beverage sector and small businesses are in a dire need for support in the post-Covid-19 world. Noon Food will come up as a restaurant-first platform built specifically for food operators.

He said that their firm has tried to reimagine the cost of food distribution, and will be offering these benefits back to restaurant operators to help them reinvest it in their businesses.

As per sources close to the matter, Noon plans to take around 5% commission from F&B operators that use its white-label platform. Currently, the firm operates in the e-commerce marketplace of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt, and is slowly extending its reach into other categories.

The company sells items in over 14 categories which includes beauty and health, fashion, electronics and mobiles, and home and kitchen.
