Union Health launches on-site specialty pharmacy service for patients

Union Health, an integrated health system, has recently launched an on-site pharmacy service. This new service launch is in line with the health system’s continuous efforts to leverage the support from highly-trained specialty pharmacy team members and deliver seamless care to patients who require complex medications of high costs.

This specialty pharmacy will be operated and developed in partnership with a leading provider of technology-enabled specialty pharmacy services, Trellis Rx, and further expand the services to additional clinics through 2021 and 2022.

Patients in the Wabash Valley are rapidly adopting specialty medications to treat health conditions like cancer, multiple sclerosis, hepatitis C, rheumatoid, and migraines. They are also facing high challenges in terms of purchasing vital treatments, as the therapy costs can reach thousands of dollars. Moreover, they require strong support to successfully adhere to the therapy regimens as well as manage side effects.

As per the statement made by Rhonda Smith, RN, MSN, NE-BC, VP of patient care services & chief nursing officer of Union Health, the company is aiming towards playing a key role in eliminating barriers such as high costs of specialty medications for patients. Its recently launched on-site specialty pharmacy services will serve the needs of patients by providing them access to the dedicated team members who will guide them in their medication journey.

Union Health’s specialty pharmacy is presently catering to the patients receiving rheumatology and cancer care at the Hux Center. The company has deployed pharmacists and liaisons, alongside other caregivers, at the clinics to deliver comprehensive and integrated care and improve medication access to ensure enhanced patient outcomes. Other services provided by the on-site pharmacy liaisons include insurance authorizations, financial assistance applications, medication refills, and others. Furthermore, the pharmacists provide counseling and medication education services to patients to improve their well-being.
