Uniqlo India begins online operations, eyes 15% sales via e-commerce

Uniqlo Co., Ltd. – a Japan-based casual wear designer, manufacturer, and retailer has reportedly announced the commencement of its e-commerce operations across India. The brand stepped foot in the nation in 2019, through a single brand FDI retail platform.

As per an official statement by the company, it projects that 15% of its sales will come from the online medium, supported by the boom in e-commerce owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

According to Tomohiko Sei, Chief Executive Officer, Uniqlo India, the entity initiated its online journey in India in 2020, by extending a strategic transitional solution also known as ‘Shop-from-Home’, and now is set to provide a complete e-commerce service to the buyers.

The customers will gain access to various products along with online-exclusive products. Over 12,000 items and a number of size options will be made available through the online channel, Sei added.

Uniqlo is all set to achieve a new milestone by introducing a strong e-commerce service such as the official online platform and the mobile application. The buyers have showcased considerable demand for Uniqlo’s superior quality and functional LifeWear essentials line. It has witnessed positive customer feedback from cities like Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Mumbai, to name a few.

It is worth noting that at present, the firm operates six stores in the Delhi-NCR area and is seeking to expand the number of stores across India gradually.

The retail sector had faced huge losses as the government announced a nationwide lockdown in view of rising coronavirus cases in the country.

Uniqlo is believed to be witnessing considerably better recovery trends in 2021 after the restrictions were eased, as compared to 2020 when the nationwide lockdown was called off. Moreover, increasing brand awareness and COVID-19 vaccinations are some of the main factors supporting the growth in industry trends, Mr. Tomohiko Sei mentioned.
